The CDC has just added the conjugated pneumococcal vaccine Prevnar to the new immunization schedule for children.
Prevnar helps prevent pneumococcal meningitis and bacteremia...and may even reduce the incidence of otitis media.
This is important. Pneumococcal infections are becoming harder to treat due to increasing resistance to antibiotics.
Recommend Prevnar for all children under age 2. It's given at 2, 4, 6, and 12 to 15 months.
And recommend Prevnar for children between 2 and 5 years who are at risk due to immunosuppression or a chronic disease.
Also suggest vaccinations for children up to age 5 who are in day-care or have chronic ear infections.
